About the Local Area

A charming city located at the head of the Cava d’Ispica gorge, Ispica was completely rebuilt in a roman baroque style after the earthquake of 1693, although it also holds fine examples of liberty architecture. The town is famous for its early discovery of varieties of carrot, from 2011 in the Protected Geographical Indication list.

Santa Maria del Focallo
From Punta Cirica to Punta Castellazzo, there are striking beaches, sometimes very small and closed in coves protected by the breakwater rocks, other times more spacious and overlooking the open sea.

Pozzallo is a pleasant seaside town with bars and restaurants along its seafront. Also just out of the town, along the coastal road towards Noto, there are secluded, unspoilt beaches and coves which are less crowded than in town.

Marina di Modica
Here is a beautiful sandy beach which is great for swimming, and many sand dunes. In the high season there are many activities, restaurants, cafes, shops and ice-cream parlours.

Sagra del Pesce (fish fair) in Pozzallo is one of Sicily’s oldest and most famous festivals. It usually takes place from the second Saturday of August on Piazza delle Rimembranze, around a huge frying pan some four metres in diameter where tons of fish are cooked and served to the waiting crowds. It is now enlivened with live concerts and cabaret shows and it can last up to nine days.

Cava d’Ispica
Cava d’Ispica is a river valley surrounded by typical Mediterranean vegetation. As one of the most fascinating archaeological sites of the island, it preserves prehistoric burial sites, Christian catacombs, rocky oratories, chapels and residential units of various types, all carved into the rock.

Mulino ad Acqua – Museo Cavallo d’Ispica
A beautiful original watermill exhibit from the early 18th century - open every day, and night visits are also available to pre-book.

Val di Noto
Drive around the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto. The valley holds a series of picturesque towns composed almost entirely of baroque churches, palaces and houses - a must see for architectural and historical enthusiasts.
