Our favourite restaurants in Modica

Blog > Our favourite restaurants in Modica

Here we highlight our favourite eateries in the lovely town of Modica in Ragusa, a region well known for its wonderful cheeses, honey and chocolate.

Modica is a beautiful historic town that is well worth visiting for its stunning baroque churches. Whether staying nearby or passing through, do check out the local cuisine and in particular, the chocolate which the town is famous for.

All the following establishments share the same passion for using the best fresh local ingredients and simple traditional local recipes. As is typical of the Province of Ragusa, on the menus you’ll find a strong bias towards meat dishes over fish and seafood.

Locanda del Colonnello Ristorante

Vico Biscari, 6

Preferring to offer a small selection of dishes which are cooked to perfection, rather than offer greater choice, the food at Locanda del Colonnello is local and delicious. This popular restaurant is run by the same family who own the Palazzo Failla Hotel, which you’ll find just down the road.

Their extensive wine list, featuring some 300 wines, includes many local offerings, and there’s something to suit every budget.

Excellent service, great food and wine and a warm welcome awaits you.

Trattoria L’Arc

Piazza Corrado Rizzone

There are a number of good trattorias in Modica, but one certainly worth visiting is L’Arc, which has been popular with locals and tourists alike since 1965. It’s a small and simple family-run trattoria, offering very good local cuisine and a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Be sure not to miss their homemade desserts.

Osteria dei Sapori Perduti

Corso Umberto I, 228

Another firm favourite for traditional cuisine is this charming osteria, which spills out onto the pavement on the main road through the town.

Their illustrated menu (with colour photographs of both the ingredients and the final dish), is translated into five languages, including English, complete with recommended wine to go with each dish. It makes choosing what to have so much easier for those who don’t speak Italian and are not familiar with the local cuisine.

Their wine list is extensive with many local wines from Ragusa, as well as wines from other Sicilian provinces.

They offer a number of very good vegetarian dishes too.

Antica Dolceria Bonajuto

Corso Umberto I, 159

While we’re talking about food in Modica, it would be rude no to mention the chocolate that the town is most famous for. The oldest chocolaterie and our personal favourite at Sicilian Places is Antica Dolceria Bonajuto. They also make excellent cannoli here too!
