A roundup of our top beaches in Sicily, from the sandy strips in the north to the rocky paradise of an offshore island...
The beaches don’t always take centre stage; Sicily is a diverse and alluring island, providing a window back in time for history buffs, a culinary masterclass for food lovers and a range of beautiful and diverse landscapes for those ready to discover the island’s great outdoors. Of course, it is difficult to turn your back on the stunning coastline during your holiday to Sicily, with some areas of the island providing the perfect beach holiday in the Mediterranean.
Following on from our ‘Favourite Beaches’ series which focused on the finest coastal spots in each individual region on Sicily, we’ve comprised a roundup of our top beaches in Sicily, from the sandy strips in the north to the rocky paradise of an offshore island.
1. Isola Bella
Pebbles | Good facilities
One of the island’s most alluring beaches, connecting Taormina to the island of Isola Bella, the views here are unforgettable. You’ll find a few small areas of public beach, but primarily the beach consists of private lidos decked out with sun loungers that you can hire for the day. Nearby restaurants are plentiful, serving up fuel and refreshment, while in close proximity you will find a cable car on hand if you wish to visit the lovely town of Taormina itself.

2. Mondello Beach
Sand | Good facilities
Stretching out for over a kilometre, Mondello Beach is one of the top sandy strips on the island and is in easy reach of Sicily’s vibrant capital Palermo. Facilities at the beach are good, with bathing stations ensuring you can freshen up after your dip before heading to see the sights of Palermo. Others however will find it difficult to leave the soft pale sand of Mondello, with the sloping beach practically carrying you into the turquoise waters as Mount Gallo towers proudly behind you.

The water here is as blue as anywhere else on the island, inviting those craving a refreshing dip, while others will happily doze off on the soft sand with the light ripple of the waves as their soundtrack.

4. Cala Rossa
Rocky | Only accessible by foot
Discovered amid the beauty of Favignana, an island located a short ferry journey from Trapani, the clear blue waters and stunning surroundings of Cala Rossa presents one of the finest beaches in Sicily. Cala Rossa is located between towering cliffs and is famed for its crystal clear water, where a spot of snorkelling is often the order of the day.
5. Punta Spalmatore
Rocky | Accessible only by foot
You’ll find the gorgeous rocky outcrop of Punta Spalmatore on the tiny and quaint island of Ustica, just a short and rewarding ferry ride from Palermo. While the beach may not boast the sand and facilities of other settings in the north of Sicily, it is the water which will grab your attention here. The ocean sparkles in hundreds of shades of blue and green, inviting both swimmers and snorkelers to dive in and soak up the warmth of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

6. Cefalu Beach
Sand | Plenty of facilities
Famed for its colourful fishing boats, beautiful sunsets and fascinating historic town, you’ll find far more than the sun, sand and sea to keep you mesmerised during your time in Cefalu. The beach itself is a charming strip of sand sat beside historic buildings and surrounded by a backdrop of verdant cliffs and hillsides. You’ll struggle to find a more picturesque beach in Sicily, especially as the town gleams in gold while the sun dips below the neighbouring hills.
