Heading on a Sicily city break to Palermo? Here are 5 day trips to take from Palermo during your island escape, showcasing the best of Northern Sicily.

In addition to being a fascinating city to explore in itself, a city break in Palermo also serves as a great base for exploring some of the other highlights of Northern Sicily. Whether you have a single day free or an entire week's itinerary to fill, you'll find some great attractions and destinations in easy reach of Palermo; perfect for giving you a break from the city for a little while.

From incredible architectural triumphs to the long, sandy delights of the beach, there's plenty on offer for those hoping to explore beyond the city streets. To give you a little flavour of what's on offer, here are 5 day trips to take from Palermo.

5 Things to see and do outside of Palermo

1. Admire Cefalú Cathedral

Listed as Sicily's seventh and most recent addition to its intriguing collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Cefalú Cathedral is a must-see for any fans of Norman architecture. Admire it from ground level or from the heights of La Rocca, peering down over the structure.

2. Go hiking in the Nebrodi National Park

Sicily's largest national park is blessed by the presence of Monte Soro, towering at 1,847m and providing some wonderful vistas for you to photograph as you hike through the oak woods and beech forests dotted around the park.

3. Hit the beach at Mondello

Up there with the best beaches of Northern Sicily, Mondello Beach is located just to the north of the city of Palermo, offering the chance for beach lovers to laze on over a kilometre of soft white sand, as well as dip their toes in the turquoise water.

4. Explore the charming villages in the Madonie Mountains

Discovered to the south east of Palermo, the slopes of Monti Madonie are a playground for lovers of the great outdoors, but it is the historic hilltop towns and villages which provide the most interest here. The area is renowned for its fantastic food, and is home to a range of excellent, traditional restaurants.

5. Enjoy a cathedral comparison in Monreale

Monreale's cathedral is listed beside that of Cefalú under Sicily's seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site listing, so it makes perfect sense to visit both and see which one you like best! Many consider Monreale's cathedral to be the island's greatest Norman building, with features such as its vast courtyard (pictured below) adding to the extravagance of this beautiful structure.
